Why do I get blood shot eyes after swimming?

June 22, 2010

This is one question people often ask when they meet me. Basically the water used in swimming pools is treated and is pure. It shouldn’t affect your body or skin or any other part of your face. But if you are getting blood shot eyes after swimming then you need to check the pool water. It may have excess chemicals used for treating water. Chlorine is the most popular chemical that is used to treat water for a swimming pool. The right amount of chlorine should be added along with other chemicals so that it doesn’t affect your eyes or cause skin rashes. As many people use a swimming pool, it is likely that the water will get mixed with human wastes (like sweat, spit and urine). It happens as it is unavoidable while swimming, especially for kids. But if the chemicals to treat water are rightly added to the swimming pool then it should not create any eyes burning.

Sometimes, first timers have a problem with burning eyes. The chemical sanitizers used for water purification should be of good quality and you should always ask your pool contractor what sanitizers he has used for your pool water. Also the filtering plant should be serviced from time to time. Adding bleaching powder or other toxic chemicals should be looked into. There are chemical free purification products available that will not cause burning eyes or dry hair or skin rashes. They are Eco friendly chemicals and are organic. Hence it is safe to use such products to keep your swimming pool water pure and clean.

If the water is high in calcium these sanitizers will prevent calcium scales from forming in water. They also help in clearing bacteria, algae and fungi. Before installing a filtration plant make sure that these below mentioned issues are looked into:
a) The plant should be environmental friendly
b) There should a system to clean the cells automatically, that ensures high cell life.
c) The purifier should have high production efficiency.
d) And lastly it should be energy efficient.

Avoid using hard chemicals as it causes burning and blood shot eyes. Also it can cause lung problems as you breathe in pool chlorinators.
